Konto for WooCommerce: setup and payment by bank claim

Konto for WooCommerce lets customers pay by bank claim directly at checkout — and Konto automatically issues a legally valid Icelandic invoice for every order. All you need to do is install the free plugin and paste two values from Konto, and your store is ready to go.

  1. 1

Konto for WooCommerce: get your API credentials from Konto

Sign in at konto.is and go to Settings → Active add-ons → “API Access & Web Services”. If the add-on is not yet active, activate it there — API access is included in the Fræ plan and higher.

Copy your user name and API key

On the Connect your applications to Konto with our API page you will see USER (user name) and API KEY. Click the field to copy both values — you will need them in the next step. The values shown in the screenshot are demo values, not real credentials.

Install Konto for WooCommerce in WordPress

Go to Plugins → Add New Plugin in your WordPress dashboard. Search for konto.is and find “Konto Checkout for WooCommerce”. Click “Install Now” and then “Activate”.

    Open Konto in WooCommerce payments

Go to WooCommerce → Settings → Payments. Under “Payment providers” you will see “Konto” in the list — click “Manage” to open the settings.

  5. 5

Enable the payment method and paste your key

Tick “Enable/Disable — Offer Konto (invoice + bank claim) at checkout” to enable the payment method. The title shown to customers at checkout defaults to “Reikningur í netbanka” — you can change it.

Paste the Username (USER) and API key (API KEY) you copied from Konto. Click “Save changes” — after saving the page confirms the connection: “Connected account: <company name>.”

    Configure invoice options and save

    Configure as needed:

    • Due date (days) — invoice due date (default 5 days).
    • Final due date (days) — final due date (default 7 days).
    • Invoice language — Konto uses Icelandic for Icelandic addresses, English otherwise.
    • Order status after a Konto checkout — Mark as Processing right away, before the customer has paid — off by default (recommended). When off the order waits as On hold and the plugin automatically marks it Processing when the claim or invoice is paid (see step 9). When on the order goes straight to Processing and payment is recorded as a note only. Stock is reserved either way.
    • Create a paid Konto invoice automatically — Konto automatically creates a paid invoice for orders placed with other payment methods (no kennitala: cash sale on the shop's own kennitala).

Click “Save changes” when you are done.

The customer picks the bank claim at checkout

At the payment step “Reikningur í netbanka” appears as a payment option. The customer clicks it to select it and enters their kennitala in the field “Kennitala (required for Konto bank invoice)”. The kennitala is only required for this payment method and its check digit is validated automatically. Companies can tick “Send the invoice as an XML e-invoice (companies)” to receive an electronic invoice.

The Konto invoice and bank claim are ready

When the order is placed, Konto automatically issues the invoice, emails the PDF to the customer (or sends an XML e-invoice) and creates a bank claim in the customer's online bank. In the order you will see:

    • “Konto invoice: MRFS-1086” under General.
    • An order note: “Konto invoice MRFS-1086 issued with a bank claim.”

By default the order waits in On hold until the claim is paid — the plugin handles the status change automatically, see the next step.

The order is automatically marked as paid

When the customer pays the bank claim in their online bank — or the invoice is marked paid in Konto — the plugin automatically moves the order from On hold to Processing. The payment date is recorded, the invoice number is set as the transaction ID, and the order receives the note “Konto: invoice … was paid”.

The plugin checks payment status every 15 minutes. To check a single order immediately, select “Konto: check payment status” under Order actions.

If the invoice or claim is cancelled in Konto the order receives a note but no automatic change occurs — adjust it yourself in WooCommerce.

Setup of Konto for WooCommerce is now complete. To sync stock levels read guide 2 — Stock sync from Konto. Refunds and credit notes are covered in guide 3.

Plan requirements and prerequisites — Konto for WooCommerce

API access (web services) is included in the Fræ plan and higher. The “Konto Checkout for WooCommerce” plugin is free on WordPress.org and requires WordPress 6.0 or later, PHP 7.4 or later, and WooCommerce. It works with both block checkout and classic checkout, and supports WooCommerce HPOS.

Card payments and Konto for WooCommerce: automatic invoices

With the “Create a paid Konto invoice automatically” setting (see step 6) Konto automatically creates a paid invoice when an order reaches Processing or Completed — regardless of the payment method used. If the customer did not provide a kennitala the invoice is recorded as a cash sale on the shop's own kennitala.

Common questions

Do customers always need to provide a kennitala when paying through Konto for WooCommerce?
A kennitala is only required when the customer selects “Reikningur í netbanka” as the payment method. For other payment methods such as card payments no kennitala is required.
What if a customer pays by card — does the order still get a Konto invoice?
Yes. Enable “Create a paid Konto invoice automatically” in the plugin settings (see step 6). Konto will then automatically create a paid invoice when the order reaches Processing or Completed. If no kennitala was provided the invoice is recorded as a cash sale on the shop's own kennitala.
Where do I find the API key and user name in Konto?
Go to Settings → Active add-ons → “API Access & Web Services” in Konto. On the Connect your applications to Konto with our API page you will see USER (user name) and API KEY. If the add-on is not in your active add-ons list, activate it there first — API access is included in the Fræ plan and higher.
Does the Konto plugin for WooCommerce cost anything?
The “Konto Checkout for WooCommerce” plugin is completely free on WordPress.org. You do need a Konto subscription with API access — Fræ or higher.
Does the plugin work with block checkout and classic checkout?
Yes, the plugin works with both block checkout and classic checkout in WooCommerce, and also supports WooCommerce HPOS (High Performance Order Storage).
What happens to stock when a Konto order comes in?
Stock is reserved as soon as the order is placed, regardless of whether it is in Processing or On hold status. Detailed stock sync between Konto and WooCommerce is covered in guide 2 — Stock sync from Konto.
What do I do if I need to issue a refund?
Refunds in WooCommerce are automatically linked to credit notes in Konto. The process is covered in guide 3 — Refunds and credit notes.
When does the order get marked as paid in WooCommerce?
When the customer pays the bank claim in their online bank — or the invoice is marked paid in Konto — the plugin checks status every 15 minutes and automatically moves the order from “On hold” to “Processing”. To check a single order immediately select “Konto: check payment status” under “Order actions”. If the claim or invoice is cancelled in Konto the order receives a note but no automatic status change occurs — adjust it manually in WooCommerce.
What is “Test mode” in the plugin settings?
”Test mode” routes requests to a dedicated Konto test server and is designed for developers and web agencies during integration. Regular shops do not need it — simply enter your live user name and API key and go live straight away. You can also enable “Debug log” to help diagnose connection issues.
